Planning our Wedding in March 2019 then taking off immediately after to Road Trip and Work Australia.
Walkers Lake located on the Donald-Avon Plains road and 275km North West of Melbourne, was just another dry lake bed in the Wimmera region. Since early 2016 the lake has undergone a transformation with a new boat ramp installed and the return of much needed water from the Wimmera Mallee Pipeline. Now Walkers Lake is growing to become a popular free camp spot. “Walkers” has been stocked with young fish and vast bird life now visit the area.
Having the lake back to former glory it’s giving families better opportunities to spend quality time together outdoors. The lakes only facility is the one eco toilet. There is plenty of space around the lake for you to set up camp, however keep in mind the area can be quite rough and trying to park with a big van could be difficult. It’s recommended to access the area first.
During the warmer months this place will be a hive of activity with locals and tourists coming to the area. It is a popular spot for keen water skiers and during the March to June it is Duck Shooting Season.
WHAT TO DO NEAR WALKERS LAKE?
Apart from walking, swimming, skiing, and relaxing on the banks of the lake. You can take a drive into the townships of Donald, St Arnaud and Marnoo to see what these communities have on offer. One of our top recommendations is to call into Kookas Country Cookies for some of the towns local made biscuits and even ask for a factory tour.
